History >
Holt District was formed on January 1, 1980 from the merger of The Regional Municipality of Saltfield and Wrenshaw County. The name "Holt District" was selected from one of the early settlers in the area, the Holt Family.
When the 2 Regoins merged, several borders were re-aligned, resulting in the creation of 2 new Townships, Saltfield (named after the former region it largely occupies) and Township of Northwest Holt (which occupies the northwestern portion of the region.) These townships were created to oversee the more rural sections of the region, which had minimal infrastructure. They are under direct control of the region, with a mayor being elected in each. These mayors represent the local population to regional council.
The Region has been facing significant growth over the past decade as large corporations move to Holt District for our business-friendly policies and natural beauty in the area. Population has risen from 198,000 in 2001 to an approximate 484 000 present day.
